Chapter 21

Members of the circle not directly tied to the Trellis family cleared out quickly after the circle finally broke, some not even going into the house in their haste to escape. Surprisingly, Talise’s parents, Mike and Monica, stayed, along with Anne, who lost her son.

“I’m sorry, Nora, but we need to work through this here. We can’t bring this energy back to the cornfield houses. He shouldn’t have been able to cross the wards here in the first place.” Micah rubbed a hand over his short hair.

Nora shook her head. “No one lives here. It’s as safe as it can be. I just wish there wasn’t so much latent energy.”

“What type of circle are you drawing?” William asked, watching Micah’s movements. “Some of the runes are the same as what James showed us, but not entirely.”

“It’s a circle of entrapment,” Greggory answered after a few beats of silence. “It’s a jail cell, held in place by Micah’s life-force. Don’t draw this type of circle, William.”

“It looks almost like the runed draining circle James showed us,” Will said again.

Micah sighed, pausing. “People do not stay willingly in a draining circle, William. Why would you stand around and let someone drain you? Entrapment and draining are almost always drawn together.”

Will rocked back on his heels, nodding in understanding. “That’s an interesting little loophole James left out of his instruction. Who are we trapping?”

“I would have closed that loophole once you got the hang of the draining part, and he knows it,” Micah replied. “Greggory is right. Do not draw this type of circle with your own hand. If you need to trap someone, do it as a group, so the person can’t break it without killing all of you. This is tied to me. To break this circle, I would have to die. I’m easier to kill than you.”

“You’ll teach me the runes later?” Will asked.

“I will. But, you don’t need the runes when it comes down to it. The runes lock it in place, allowing you to walk away if you need to. The focused intent of any circle you stand will get the job done by itself, though.”

Jake’s eyebrows shot up. “Say that again.”

Micah met his eyes. “You need to understand this more than everyone else in this room, Jake. If you close a circle with the intent to trap, it will not release whatever you hold within the circle until the circle breaks. If you intend to drain, it will drain. If you intend to cycle power in ascendance, it will do so. The person that closes the circle drives the purpose. That’s why James rails so hard about the person drawing and closing the circles during training.”

“The organic circle, as well?” Jake asked.

“I don’t see why not,” Micah said. After a pause, he continued. “It terrifies me that you took the Mistress’s circle tonight. If you had decided to drain us all, would it have worked?”

Jake stared at him, unblinking.

“I have never known another Anchor. I told you that before.
